Chapter 11
The year was passing rapidly. Seara was with child and Gandálfr would be a father again. I knew that would affect both of my hearthweru. Sweyn Skull Taker began to organise the training of the crews for he knew that we might have to bear the brunt of any fighting. I also spent at least two days a week, as winter gripped the land, practising with my men, the crew that I would lead. The four boys joined the other youngsters who, once we were ashore, would act as slingers. Bersi trained with us although he would not be coming. I taught the men I would lead the signals to change formation. Although the jarl would give the overall command I knew, from the battles in which I had fought, that often the hersirs would be called upon to adapt. I intended my men to be the most efficient on the battlefield.
Galmr arrived at Agerhøne just a month after the feast. He came with his hearthweru and animals. âI thought I would visit Aksel the Swede and collect our money. I hear they have good weapons for sale. If we are to go to war then we should have the best of weapons.â
Mary was never happy about unexpected visitors and she kept out of Galmrâs way. He and his men only stayed one night. I ate with them in my warrior hall. Four of the young men who had been with me at Haestingas were now his hearthweru and I was pleased that Eirik, who had carried my horn, was one of them. He was keen to fight Thorkell and the others. âWhen we were with them at Hringmaraheior, they looked down on us for we had leather byrnies, old helmets, and poor swords. I want them to see what we can do with a mail byrnie, good helmets and a fine sword.â
I shook my head, âYou and the others showed your mettle when you followed me over the wall of Haestingas and faced ten times our number. That you did so with just a leather byrnie makes you more courageous than any who stayed with Thorkell. A good warrior does not judge himself against other men but himself.â
Galmrâs hearthweru looked at me in surprise and Eirik said, âEven you, Sven Saxon Sword?â
âEven me. I strive to be the best warrior I can be for that way may mean I survive. I never believe that I am the best warrior on any battlefield for the day I do is the day I will die.â
When we reached Ribe Galmr met Alf, my cousin. Hawk was no longer a warrior. He had lived apart for too long and I saw that Galmr was surprised when he met the man who looked like a merchant. We had told him of Alf at the Battle of Svolder and I think he was a little disappointed. I was not for a man did not choose his life, the Norns did. Alf was happy. His wife was pretty but like Alf, had become a little plumper.
